What is TENS therapy?

TENS is short for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and therapy involves the use of low-voltage electric currents to treat pain. A TENS unit consists of a battery-powered device that delivers electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the surface of the pet’s skin. Non-allergenic, non-greasy conductive gel, similar to ultrasound gel, is used to help the electrodes make a bond between the underside of the electrode and the skin.

How does it work?

TENS therapy blocks or changes the perception of pain with the use of a small device delivers the current at or near nerves. This releases endorphins into the blood stream and cerebrospinal fluid to relieve pain. This therapy modality may required shaving a small area on the patient to get good contact and sometimes a slight tingly feeling can be felt. Sessions typically last about 10 to 20 minutes.

There is a slight tingling sensation and many pets will actually enjoy it once they become more used to it.  We also can educate you to preform treatments on your own!
